Halloween Events in the Savannah

Savannah once again is on the list for the spookiest cities in the United States! In the past few years, many newspapers and travel sites, such as  Home Away, US Travel, and HGTV Front Door  have named Savannah, Georgia one of the haunted cities in the United States, if not the world. Tourists from around the world come to visit the city and look for paranormal activities. During the Halloween season, there are many activities for young and old to celebrate the holiday as well as learn a bit about the history of the area.

There are many walking and driving tours in Savannah that make stops at haunted businesses and homes in the downtown historic district of Savannah. As a tourist, you can just wander around the many squares and come across a house or building that has some type of haunted or paranormal story. One of the most famous “haunted” house is the Mercer House which was made even more famous (or infamous) by the book and then the movie of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. The Hampton Lillibridge House, built in 1796, has numerous haunted stories from patrons and residents. The Moon River Brewing Company  shares openly tales about its ghostly inhabitants and staff and customers paranormal experiences. There are many eerie and yet beautiful cemeteries in Savannah that you can visit all year. The Pirates House had a tunnel in the basement was used for many years as a secret passage to the Savannah River to force unwilling men into servitude on the high seas. The Bonaventure Cemetery is one of the most famous cemeteries in Savannah, but if you are looking for haunted places, don’t miss out on the Colonial Park Cemetery, built near the sites of many of the tragic events in Savannah’s history.

If touring actual “haunted” places in not your ideal Halloween celebration, there are also family-friendly Halloween events in the area. Downtown Hinesville is having the Scarecrow Stroll and Beggar’s Night on 10/24 with events starting at 5pm. Families can enjoy scarecrow building, pumpkin carving ,rides, and a haunted house at the Old Jail.  Some local farms host fall festivals that are perfect Halloween entertainment for the entire family. Poppell Farms in Odum, Ottawa Farms in Bloomingdale, and Boone Hall Plantation all offer pumpkin patches, hayrides and corn mazes. For the older kids and adults, visit the Alee Temple Terror Plantation for a bit of spooky and scary fun. This year, you can visit the Tall Ship, El Galeon Andalucia October 30^th to November 1^st as the visiting ship is transformed into a haunted pirate ship!
